The Literacy Council provides one-on-one tutoring to qualified individuals. In 2007, we offered services to more than 600 adults and children. All Literacy Council services are free of charge and confidential.
To continue to meet the needs of our community, we are seeking tutors for the following programs:
- Adult Basic Education Program is available to those whose spoken and written English skills are below the 9th grade level. Tutoring in math is also available.
- English as a Second Language Program is available to those whose English skills need to be improved to meet their personal and professional goals.
- Workforce Literacy Program operates in the Midland MichiganWorks! facility. This is a skill-building program for job seekers and provides instruction in reading, writing, math and other areas.
- Our innovative Dyslexia Clinic has received state recognition. We are one of few literacy councils in Michigan to offer services for learners with dyslexia. The school-based portion of this program is growing very rapidly, as we work with young struggling readers before they become illiterate adults.
