Why is Literacy Important?

So what is so important about the Literacy Council?
We’ll spell it out for you:

Learners – Everything we do is designed for our learners. We applaud their successes and marvel at their determination.

Innovation – We are the only literacy council in the state to have an office at the local MichiganWorks! office. Our dyslexia program is so innovative and effective that we are partnering with local school districts to reach all the students we can.

Tremendous growth – The number of learners we tutor each week has quintupled; that’s a 500% jump in just four years! We now teach more than 160 learners per week.

Empowerment – Illiteracy is one of the root causes of poverty. We empower and educate people so they can better provide for their families.

Reading, writing and arithmetic – Most folks think we only teach reading, but we cover all of the “three R’s” of basic education. In fact, almost all of the learners in our workforce program sought math skills.

Achieving goals – We determine what a student’s hopes and dreams are, and then we develop a one-on-one tutoring plan to get them there.

Community need – Midland has good schools and a solid economy, but at least 12% of our friends and neighbors are functionally illiterate. Surprisingly, 6% of Midland County residents have less than a ninth-grade education. Having parents who do not complete high school is considered the best predictor of whether a child will live in poverty. We are working to break the cycle of illiteracy and poverty.

Your support makes a difference – Reading changes lives. Your commitment to the Literacy Council changes your community and has a powerful impact on the lives of our learners and their families.
